You know the feeling. Your chest feels tight. Your mind won’t stop racing. The to-do list is so long you don’t even know where to start, and the more you try to move forward, the more stuck you feel. It’s like standing in the middle of a storm — the wind is fierce, papers are flying, voices are calling for your attention, and you can’t even see the horizon.
Overwhelm doesn’t just weigh you down; it blinds you to the beauty right in front of you. It robs you of your joy, drains your energy, and makes the voice of God seem distant, almost drowned out by the noise of urgency. But here’s the truth — you’re not stuck in this storm forever. There is a way to quiet the chaos, breathe deeply again, and step forward with a heart anchored in peace.
1. Pause Before You Push
Our natural instinct when we feel behind is to work harder, faster, and with more intensity — but sometimes the most powerful step is to stop. Picture yourself putting down the heavy basket you’ve been carrying and letting your shoulders drop. Close your eyes. Inhale slowly, holding that breath like it’s the first gift you’ve opened all day. Exhale the tension. In that pause, pray silently: “Lord, here I am. Quiet my heart. Help me hear You.”
2. Pray for Perspective
Overwhelm is often a sign we’re carrying loads God never asked us to carry. Kneel by your bed, sit in your favorite chair, or stand in the kitchen if that’s where you find a moment — and pray: “Lord, what truly matters today? Show me what to let go. Show me where to focus.” When you see your day through His eyes, what once felt like a mountain can become a manageable hill.
3. Simplify Your Steps
When your thoughts are tangled like a ball of yarn, trying to do everything at once will only tighten the knots. Grab a notebook or even a scrap of paper. Write it all down — every errand, every task, every stray thought shouting for attention. Then circle just one thing. Give yourself permission to focus there. One faithful, intentional step forward is worth more than ten rushed and scattered ones.
4. Protect Your Space
Boundaries are like fences in a garden — they don’t keep the beauty in, they keep the weeds out. Every time you say yes to something that drains you, you’re saying no to something that nourishes you. And you were never meant to run on empty. Give yourself the grace to say no without guilt. This isn’t selfish — it’s obedience to God’s call to guard your heart.
5. Invite Support
The enemy loves to isolate us, whispering that we’re supposed to handle it all alone. But God calls us into community. Maybe it’s a trusted friend who will pray with you, a women’s Bible study that will speak truth into your life, or a Christ-centered life coach who will help you untangle your thoughts and find the next step. Whatever it looks like, invite someone in. You were never meant to walk through the storm without a hand to hold.
Closing Thought: Overwhelm begins to fade when we slow our pace, open our hearts, and align our priorities with God’s wisdom. The waves might not stop instantly, but you’ll find that the same God who calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee is the One who will calm the waters within you.
At Kristelle Liora, our life coaching and group circles are designed to walk with you in that process — helping you trade chaos for clarity, exhaustion for joy, and fear for peace.
